Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Croudson Joins Scunthorpe On Loan

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 14/08/2001

SCUNTHORPE UNITED have eased their goalkeeping crisis by signing Grimsby Town's reserve keeper Steve Croudson on loan. The 21-year-old shot stopper joins the Iron for a month after the Third Division outfit's first choice keeper Tommy Evans was injured in their opening game against Kidderminster.

The Mariners have allowed neighbours Scunthorpe to play Croudson in the Iron's Worthington Cup tie against Rotherham next week, which means the Grimsby-born 'keeper would be ineligable to play for Town in subsequent rounds, as he would be cup-tied.

"... We are delighted that Grimsby have allowed us to take him on loan..."

"We are delighted that Grimsby have allowed us to take him on loan as cover for Tommy and also to play in the cup game." United manager and former Grimsby boss Brian Laws told Radio Humberside.

Croudson's first team chances have been extremely limited at Blundell Park due to the outstanding form of Welsh International Danny Coyne, who was ever-present last season, and who recently signed a new two year extention to his contract.

This season, Croudson faces additional competition in the form of 20-year-old Dutch 'keeper Ronald Ermes, who joined the Mariners in the summer from Feyenoord, and a spell at Scunthorpe presents a good opportunity for "The Kitten" to gain first team experience, albeit in the lower leagues.
