A Statement From Chairman Peter Furneaux

By: Mariners Net
Date: 25/06/2001

WITH the new season fast approaching and much discussion regarding the Mariners forthcoming Division One campaign, Chairman Peter Furneaux today issued a statement on behalf of the Board of Directors to clarify the clubs current financial situation.

"Grimsby Town Football Club is a proud member of the First Division, and the team is there on merit. Indeed, there is no doubt that many teams, including our near neighbours, are aspiring to emulate Grimsby Town."

"We have the basis of a good squad and in due course, when the future of the remaining out of contract players has been resolved, the manager will make his recommendations to the Board for strengthening that squad. The Board will support the manager wherever possible, as we have shown with the new deals for senior players and the permanent signing of Stuart Campbell."

".…It will be prudent management of this money which will ensure the future of this club in the First Division .…."

"There is no greater incentive for everyone connected with this club than to once again retain our status amongst the elite of the Football League. Whilst we are fully aware of what is required to achieve that aim, we will be realistic, and will be careful not to overstretch our future resources. The facts are that our wage bill is currently two and a half times the gate income, and we have the lowest fan base in the division."

"The club's wage bill for contracted players will be higher for the new season than at any time in the club's history, and whilst the increased TV revenue is very welcome, it will be prudent management of this money which will ensure the future of this club in the First Division. It is a case of good housekeeping.

In regard to the new stadium project the chairman reiterated his previous statement: "With a fan base of 4,500, it is far more realistic for the Club to look at a capacity of 14,000 with the opportunity to expand at a later date. Again, it is all about being practical and realistic with the finances".

Next Story: "I don't want to go anywhere. The club has been very good to me but obviously I need to get back and get a contract. It's going to be difficult for the club itself next season and they need everybody involved to get through the season." Richard Smith.Full Story Here!
