Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Judgement Day

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 05/10/2000

In a statement released today by Town manager Lennie Lawrence, the Grimsby boss gave his verdict on the players on trial at the club over recent weeks. Lawrence has now had the opportunity to have a good look at the trialists in a competitive game, and has made his decisions on them.

The Decisions:

  • Jason Batty: Jason is with us for a longer period and what he needs is specialist goalkeeping coaching which we have now commenced. However, we are not offering him anything at this time.
  • Sascha Lenhart: We will not be offering him a contract.
  • Carsten Lektonen (The Dane): We will not be continuing with his trial.
  • Alvarez Goya Moises (The Spaniard): No offer will be made.

A further trialist, Neil Murray, a Scot playing for German second division club FSV Mainz was unable to play in the reserve game yesterday against Stoke City as clearance had not been obtained in time from the German FA. It is understood that he will receive a trial pending clearance from the German authorities.

Lawrence, in reference to the on-going hunt for a new striker, which is reaching desperation point for both the manager and fans, said today: "I need a striker by next Saturday". Last week Lawerence suggested that he had found (or was near to finding) his man, who would hopefully be arriving at Blundell Park in time for the next league game against Huddersfield.

Lawrence added that he was still continuing to look at other players and had "many irons in the fire" and that he was looking at "2 or 3 English players and 2 or 3 foreign players".

On whether Lawrence is looking to buy players or bring them on loan first, the Grimsby boss said: "We would like to bring them in on loan initially and offer them terms later."
