Wimbledon Game Off

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 30/08/2000

Town's 1st division game at Wimbledon on Saturday has been called off as three of the Dons players are on international duty. This gives new Town boss Lennie Lawrence a bit of breathing space in which to get accustomed to the players, and pursue his search for a loan striker to end the goal drought.

Wimbledon players John Hartson (Wales), Mark Williams (Northern Ireland) and Trond Andersen (Norway) will all be on international duty over the weekend. A new date for the match has not yet been arranged. Town boss Lawrence today greeted the news as a "blessing in disguise", adding that no loan players would be signed until the end of next week. He explained that loan players would be hard to obtain before then given that Town's next first team fixture is the return leg of the first round match against Carlisle United in the Worthington Cup on Tuesday, which the Mariners lead 2-0. Any appearance in the Worthington Cup for the Mariners would "cup tie" a player on loan for the duration of the season in the competition. Financially it would not make sense either to get a loan player until the end of next week, with no first division fixture scheduled this weekend. Town played well with an untried system and did everything last night but score, a fact that Lawrence acknowledged today: "The way we played last night against Crewe proves we are a First Division club but we have to start scoring goals.". As well as the quest for a new front man, some time to cool down must be welcome news for every one at the club. In the last eight days there have been two managerial announcements and three games!
