Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

29/08 Crewe 2nd Half

By: Jeremy Baily
Date: 30/08/2000

Crewe 2 Grimsby Town 0
29 Aug 2000, Nationwide League Division 1

The sky is now blacker than an Aussies 'Ball and Chain'. The half-time ent's were none, unless you call Town fans patting a beach ball up into the air while we waited for the second half to start.

No changes by either side at half-time, we started off as we had finished the 1st half, going forward (in a kind of zig-zag style), keeping possesion and looking by far the better team. We then became more direct, Black shot wide from outside the box, so did Jeffrey, Smith twice did the same, we had 7 or 8 corners in a 10 minute spell, Allen and Smith had efforts blocked, loads of pressure, but we, just could not put anything on target, it was obvious to all, that it was only a matter of time before Crewe broke away and scored their second goal of the season.

So it came to pass, the same fullback who crossed for their first goal did the same again, laying it back for RODNEY JACK to fire home from 12 yards out. The only shot Crewe had in the second half!

Clare had come on for Black about five minutes before the goal, now with only 15 minutes left, we just huffed and puffed our way to a fine 2-0 defeat. Almost forgot, Crewe could and should have scored again, but somehow from two yards out the chap managed to send it back across the goal from whence it came, instead of into the net, 3-0 would have been a bit harsh!

No one was booked, nor did the ref tell anyone off, it was that sort of game, Livvo did clatter Rodney Jack in the first half and Jack limped off, but the bugger came back again.

The Crewe defence was not as impregnable as 'The Berlin Wall' it didn't have to be, the second half was like the first, not one save was made by the home goalkeeper.

To sum up the evening is hard, we are pleasing to the eye, but fail at the final hurdle, Allen and Clare, when he came on, get pushed off the ball to easily, Jeffrey tries, but isn't stong enough either. None are fast enough to out pace a defender or move first, when a half-chance comes their way. We just did not look like we would score, we didn't.
