Town Hold Leaders to a Draw

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 25/02/2023

GRIMSBY came from behind to rescue a point against leaders Leyton Orient in a 2-2 draw but they could perhaps have won the game had Glennon scored a penalty when the score was 2-2.

Paul Hurst only made one change from the midweek draw with Harrogate when Alex Hunt replaced Bryn Morris in midfield.

Both sides had chances in early play but Leyton Orient drew first blood when poor defending saw Kelman allowed to turn and shoot, despite initially slipping over and firing the visitors in front.

Clifton came close with a shot from a narrow angle but Town went in a goal down at the break.

The Mariners upped their game in the second half and soon were level. Hunt supplied Glennon who delivered a brilliant cross which McAtee stroked into the net.

Town looked the better side and it was no surprise when they went in front. Llloyd intercepted an under-hit pass and raced through on goal, finishing brilliantly to see Town leading over the Champions Elect.

However, a break in play saw Town lose their concentration and give the ball away with Moncur guiding a shot past Crocombe to level the match at 2-2.

Town then won a penalty when McAtee tried to pull the ball back from the touchline and it struck a hand. Glennon surprisingly took the spot kick but his attempt was easily saved.

The Mariners had to settle for a point they would probably have taken before the game but their second-half performance more than matched the visitors and they will rue the penalty miss.

With two more home draws this week, Grimsby are inching towards safety and attention can now turn to the FA Cup and the massive game at Southampton on Wednesday when roughly 4,000 Town fans will be cheering their team on in person.
