Town Taste Defeat at Home

GRIMSBY succumbed to their first home defeat of the season, thanks to a 1-0 defeat to Notts County, with the winner coming in the 89th minute. The Mariners had the lion's share of possession and dominated for long periods, but had little to show for their endeavours.

Alex Hunt and Harry Clifton returned to the starting line-up, replacing Bapaga (bench) and McAtee (injured).

John-Lewis improved upon Tuesday's poor performance at Wealdstone and won a free kick in a strong position which Hunt blasted over. He then hit the top of the crossbar with a cross-shot that almost dropped into the goal.

But otherwise the first half was a stalemate with Notts County offering very little going forward. On the downside, full-back Ryan Sears was forced off with an arm injury, with Revan being a straight swap.

Notts County were unhappy with their performance as they made two subs at halftime and did look stronger going forward in the second half.

But Grimsby still continued to create the best chances. A good knockdown by Sousa set up John-Lewis who spun and shot just wide.

Town gifted County their first chance when they gave the ball away and McKeown was on hand to save well from Roberts.

Taylor came on for John-Lewis and could have had a dream return when he latched onto a loose pass, but he fired wide.

But Notts had the last laugh when Palmer broke through on the right and fired straight at McKeown. The ball rebounded for a tap-in to Rodrigues, who set the away end into delirium.

Hurst brought on Bopaga for injury time but it was too little too late.

The result was rough on Town who had deserved at least a point and were much improved from Wealdstone. Critics might save Bapaga should have come on earlier for Coke to try and win the game, but it would have been a brave decision to try and win the game, which could, in turn, have misfired.
